APPLYING FOR CONDITIONAL REGISTRATION - IMGs

To practice medicine in Western Australia, a medical practitioner must be registered with the Board.

International Medical Graduates ("IMGs") are eligible for Conditional Registration via the:

  • Competent Authority Pathway
  • Standard Pathway
  • Specialist Pathway

Eligibility is subject to the Board being satisfied the person:

  • Is competent to practise medicine;
  • Has a sound knowledge of the English language; and
  • Is of good character.

Those practitioners seeking Conditional Registration with the Board, should first liaise with an employing/sponsoring organisation. The employing/sponsoring organisation will then make the initial application to the Board on behalf of the practitioner.

Conditional registration is site and position specific and is generally granted:

  • For a specific duration (on an annual basis); and
  • Subject to satisfactory performance.
Recognised specialists are not subject to site, position or time limitations.

An IMG who received conditional registration prior to 1st July 2008, may be granted conditional registration on an annual basis, for a period of up to five years subject to satisfactory performance.

An IMG seeking registration beyond five years will be expected to:

  • Have successfully completed both components of the Australian Medical Council (AMC) examinations (which include both the AMC Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) examination and the AMC Clinical examination); or
  • Be able to demonstrate progress towards Fellowship or equivalence with that of an Australian Fellow of a recognised Australian Specialist College.

A doctor completing both components of the AMC examinations will be required to successfully complete a period of 12 months of Supervised Clinical Practice with satisfactory performance appraisals prior to being eligible for General (Unconditional) Registration.

Once the Board has granted Approval of the Initial Assessment ("Initial Approval") the medical practitioner will then be required to make an appointment and present to the Board with the appropriate documentation for conditional registration.

Note: Approval of the Initial Assessment means that the Board has considered the initial application from the employer and it has deemed that the medical practitioner is eligible to apply for Conditional Registration in Western Australia. The process of applying for Conditional Registration is a two-stage process as follows:
